Cancel Culture

Cancel culture refers to the popular practice of withdrawing support for (canceling) public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive. The canceling aspect is when massive groups of people on social media call the celebrity out for their words or actions. Canceling seems to be a good practice in theory but has gotten out of hand in the past few years.

Instances where celebrities were canceled on genuine grounds :

Rapper Azealia Banks made some horrible remarks which took both a racist and a homophobic demeanor. Twitter then canceled her account and her UK booking agency dropped her for good. Her fans were done and now she is long forgotten.

Kathy Griffins posted a photo of herself holding a mock version of Donald Trump’s decapitated head. The comedian realized her mistake and apologized for her actions, admitting that she went too far. She was then fired from a staggering number of gigs, some of them she had been doing for years, her tour dates were also canceled.

Here are some examples of a celebrity getting canceled for absolutely no reason :

Billie Eilish liked a meme on Instagram featuring a snapshot of one-direction members Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson from the band’s “ You and I “ music video along with the caption: “When you move and the Snapchat filter comes off.” Though some people didn’t think the post was a big deal, others thought it was unnecessarily cruel and blasted Eilish on social media for calling singer Louis Tomlinson ugly.

Karan Johan and Alia Bhatt were canceled for allegedly endorsing nepotism on the pretext of actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s untimely demise.

“Cancelers” want something to hate. But they can’t do it the classical way (by choosing somebody who has done something wrong to them). They want to be virtuous while hating.

They want their moral value to be defined by their hate. They want to be congratulated and admired for their hate. They want to find a group of haters for supporting them in their hate and for encouraging them.

What is bad about Cancel Culture? It is an evil force intent on destroying history, individualism and it thrives on creating division when there is no need and causing misery for the sport of it. Trial without due process - Mob rule.
