WHO urges rich countries to stop jumping queues
On Friday, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has asked the rich countries to stop jumping queues for getting Covid-19 vaccine first. He explained that ever since the vaccines are out, the wealthier nations have taken the majority of the supply of multiple vaccines which has increased the price for everyone.
The countries that have booked excess vaccine doses have been asked to release them and donate them to the Covax programme, which aims to distribute vaccines equitably around the world.
Also, countries and manufacturers making bilateral deals for the vaccine were condemned.
Tedros said that no country who could cut the queue and should focus on protecting the lives of those most at risk.
Tedros said 42 countries including 36 high-income nations and 6 middle-income had started rolling out their Covid-19 vaccination programme.
