UN Human Rights Commissioner urges the Indian Government to safeguard the rights of human rights activists and NGOs

On Tuesday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, urged the Government of India to protect the rights of human rights defenders and NGOs and expressed disappointment at the enforcement of obscurely worded laws, especially the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) that is vague and raises concerns that it will stifle the voices of human rights activists.
Several UN bodies have also expressed concern about the act, which prevents the receipt of foreign funds "for any activities prejudicial to the public."
The Ministry of External Affairs has responded by saying that violation of the law cannot be approved in the name of human rights.
