Punjab & Haryana High Court rules “Marriage between the first cousins is illegal”

The Punjab and Haryana high court while hearing an anticipatory bail application has said that marriage between first cousins is illegal and it cannot be performed.
This assertion came after a 21 year old man moved the high court against the state of Punjab seeking anticipatory bail under sec.363, sec.366A of the IPC.
Petitioners counsel said that the couple had filed a criminal writ petition in the court seeking protection from their families. The court guaranteed them security but on the other hand, court made it clear the order shall not be taken to protect the petitioner from legal action for violation of law, it committed by them.
Opposing the plea, the court said that they cannot marry each other under the Hindu marriage act.
