NGT Expands Scope Of Hearing In Case Against Use Of Firecrackers In Delhi NCR

On Wednesday, a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, of the National Green Tribunal, while hearing petitions seeking corrective actions against pollution in NCR due to the use of firecrackers, decided to expand the scope of proceedings to as many as 18 states and union territories. The Bench also comprised Judicial Member SK Singh, and Expert Members SS Garbyal and Nagin Nanda.
The new title of the case is "Tribunal on its own motion."
The Bench is considering a direction to ban the use of firecrackers during the period air quality is beyond norms in 122 non-attainment cities and sought response from the Governments of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Uttarakhand, and West Bengal.
It has issued notices to the Governments of Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh and the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) regarding the matter.
