Most major Chinese universities have shut down LGBTQ social media groups over night

Tencent's WeChat social media network suspended and deleted all previous material of accounts for campus LGBTQ groups at China's top colleges on Tuesday evening, striking a severe blow to LGBTQ awareness and rights. Despite the fact that many campus LGBTQ organisations have never been formally recognised or authorised, they have been able to operate unofficially for years beneath the surface, distributing content online and carrying out some events when possible despite periodic crackdowns.
Late Tuesday evening, however, users discovered that most of these organisations' social media accounts, as well as gender-related academic research affiliations, had been removed off the internet.
“In response to related complaints, all content has been blocked for violating the ‘Regulations on the Management of Internet User Official Account Information Services,' and all account usage has been suspended,” the notice now appears on all of them.
Some WeChat users noted on Tuesday that when they exited the sites for the now-defunct LGBTQ accounts, the account would be hidden from view and only searchable indirectly using the term "unnamed official account."
