Madagascar fights for sovereignty amid Chinese debt-trap diplomacy

China has been attempting to entrap African countries in its debt diplomacy, but Madagascar is now in the forefront of the continent's fight for sovereignty. Madagascar became one of the first African countries to facilitate the expansion of Chinese footprints in Africa by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) with China, oblivious to the consequences, according to the International Forum for Rights and Security (IFFRAS).

In Madagascar, China has aided the building of infrastructure, poured in massive revenue resulting in an increased number of Chinese-funded enterprises which now comprise 90 per cent of the market. Locals have lost their jobs, their trade and commerce has been disrupted, and shops selling Chinese consumer goods at low prices have opened up in every nook and cranny, increasing locals' reliance on Chinese items.
