Netanyahu is under increasing pressure from his country's closest friend, but he looks determined to inflict maximum damage on Hamas in a battle that might preserve his political future. Nonetheless, diplomatic attempts to reach an agreement on a cease-fire have progressed, and a senior Hamas official said he expects a cease-fire to be reached shortly.
