Inclusion of “undeserving” individuals in Assam national register of citizens: Guwahati high court directs NRC co-ordinator

In a recent verdict, the Guwahati high court asked the coordinator of national register of citizens (NRC) to explain that how the name of the petitioner got included in the register.
The order was passed in writ proceedings initiated by a resident of Nalbari district against an order of the foreigner’s tribunal.
The court observed that, petitioner’s name appeared in the NRC even when the proceedings were had been initiated against her on the basis given by the superintendent of border police. The coordinator was directed to file the affidavit within 3 weeks on October 2019.
The final list of Assam NRC was published on 31st August, 2019, following the directions of the Supreme Court. The case name is RAHIMA BEGAM V/S UNION OF INDIA & ORS.
The process of updating ofbassam NRC is monitored by the bench of the Supreme Court. The first draft list was published in December 3018, which was followed by a second draft list on 31st July, 2018.
