Pro-democracy activist and media tycoon Jimmy Lai has been charged under the city's national security law on allegations by an unnamed source of conspiring with foreign forces and compromising national security.
Mr. Lai would be the highest-profile person charged under the new law imposed on Beijing in June. The West and human rights groups have blamed the law to be a means to crush nonconformity.
Hong Kong police have not commented.
Mr. Lai was not allowed bail after n arrest related to fraud.
He has actively supported rallies for Hong Kong's democracy, leading Beijing to label him a traitor.
The authorities have intensively dismissed lawmakers and jailed high-profile democracy activists after the law has been passed to silent the opposing forces.
