Disagreement about the BJP flag on the tricolour at Kalyan Singh's prayer meeting; experts were split on the topic.
The BJP banner covering a section of the national flag draped over former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh's mortal remains has sparked a controversy. Experts, on the other hand, are split on the subject. Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, the Union Minister for Minority Affairs, slammed the opposition, saying that promoting negativity was their USP (Unique Selling Proposition).
Naqvi completely disagreed with opposition parties who claimed the BJP had broken the Indian Flag Code or degraded the tricolour in any way. “Some people have a problem,” the Union minister remarked. Their USP has become spreading negativity in society. Fulfilling the wishes of a deceased person is part of the country's culture and history. However, some uninformed people who engage in dynasty politics and sycophancy would be unaware of its significance.”
Naqvi was referring to Kalyan Singh’s wish in one of his emotional speeches that he wanted to cover his body by the BJP flag. Several Congress leaders, including Shashi Tharoor, raised the issue and questioned the BJP over “this insult to the Tricolour”. Section 2 of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act says that anyone who burns, defiles, mutilates, tramples upon or shows disrespect to the National Flag shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both.
