Dalit labour activist Nodeep Kaur bail hearing adjourned till February 24:
Nodeep Kaur (24), Dalit labor rights activist, who had moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court to seek daily bail, did not obtain any immediate relief on Monday, with the matter being adjourned to February 24 at the request of the counsel of the Haryana government. Kaur's bail plea came before the court of Justice Avneesh Jhingan for a hearing, which sent a notice to the State of Haryana in the case. Her plea will now be heard along with the HC's suo motu cognizance of her "illegal confinement" and the plea of President Shiv Kumar of Mazdoor Adhikar Sangathan (24) seeking the transfer of his case to the CBI. Haryana Police picked up Shiv on January 16, four days after Kaur, a member of the same outfit.
Kaur, currently imprisoned at Karnal, has argued through her lawyers, advocate Arshdeep Singh Cheema and Harinder Deep Singh Bains, before the HC bench that she was wrongly arraigned as accused in the FIR registered at the Kundli Police Station in Sonepat on 12 January. Her lawyer argued: "For two reasons, the petitioner was targeted primarily, firstly, that local police are in cahoots with the KIA (Kundli Industrial Area) and make deliberate and calculated attempts to curb and continue to manipulate workers' unionisation. Secondly, along with MAS, the petitioner was successful in generating enormous support for the movement of farmers that irked the administration and, thus, attempts were made to suppress the said support.
Her lawyer further argued that the information collected by the investigation agency leaves no question that any stretch of imagination can not attract IPC section 307 (attempt to murder). Placing the medico-legal accounts of wounded police officers on paper, the lawyer argued that it shows that the aforementioned injuries have been purposely inflated and kept ambiguous so that such an exaggeration is not found or shown.
