Cyclone Nivar to make landfall tonight in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry: All you need to know
The severe cyclonic storm is very likely to cross Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts tonight or early hours of tomorrow. During its landfall, extremely high wind speed is expected, in the range of 130 to 140 km an hour.Cyclone Nivar has intensified into severe cyclonic storm and it is set to further intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm later in the day today, as per the MET Department in Chennai. The cyclone is expected to make landfall in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry late this evening.
The cyclonic storm is currently about 290 km east-southeast of Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu. It is very likely to cross Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts tonight or early hours of tomorrow. During its landfall, extremely high wind speed is expected, in the range of 130 to 140 km an hour, gushing to 155 km per hour.Cyclone Nivar is expected to move in the west-northwest direction for the next six-hours and then turn towards the north-western direction and reach the coast. Seven districts in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are expected to get extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places today under the impact of the cyclonic storm. Sixteen other districts including Chennai and its suburbs are expected to experience isolated heavy to very heavy rain. Chennai has already experienced torrential rainfall for a few hours last evening, which left arterial roads under sheets of water.The governments of both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have announced restrictions in view of the cyclone. Rail and bus services have either been curtailed or suspended in the vulnerable districts due to the cyclone.
NDRF personnel on alert in coastal areas
The National Disaster Response Force has also issued precautions while its personnel are on alert in coastal areas. The NDRF DG informed that 12 teams have been positioned in Tamil Nadu, 2 teams in Puducherry and 1 team in Karaikal. Besides this, 3 teams have been positioned in Nellore, 3 in Vizag and 1 team in Chittoor.
