Civil Aviation Ministry caps deployment of flights at 50%
The Ministry of Civil Aviation reduced the limitation on airlines' capacity deployment from 80 percent to 50 percent of pre-COVID-19 permitted flights on Friday. The order will take effect on June 1, 2021, and will remain in place until July 31, 2021.
The government's decision comes as daily passenger traffic has dropped dramatically as a result of an increase in COVID-19 infections and numerous states requiring RT-PCR testing for arriving travellers.
On May 18, a total of 39,370 passengers were transported by various Indian carriers, compared to over 2.5 lakh passengers in March.
When passenger demand was showing indications of revival in December, the government increased allowed capacity from 70% to 80%.
