China goes online to mock 'beautiful sight' of US Capitol chaos
On Thursday morning, photo comparisons of Hong Kong protesters in the Legislative Council Complex in July 2019 with Wednesday's Washington riots did rounds on China's internet.
The photos mocked America's troubled democracy after supporters of President Donald Trump broke into the US Capitol, comparing the chaos to the Hong Kong anti-government protests of 2019.
Nancy Pelosi commented in June 2019 about Hong Kong's mass pro-democracy demonstrations, which were mostly peaceful at that time, as a "beautiful sight."
The hashtag "Trump supporters storm US Capitol" garnered 230 million views on Weibo.
A comment saying "At present, all European countries' leaders have shown double standards and condemned it (Washington rioting)," gained over 5,000 likes.
