Officials claimed on Sunday that a member of the ruling JD(U) in Bihar has been charged under several sections of the IPC as well as the SC/ST Act for riding a train to New Delhi in his underwear and quarrelling with fellow passengers when they took offence. According to them, a FIR was filed against MLA Gopal Mandal on Saturday at the GRP police station in Ara, based on a complaint.
On Friday, just after the train arrived at its destination, the complainant, Prahlad Paswan, recorded his statement at GRP New Delhi. He claimed he was in the same Tejas Express compartment as the legislator and expressed his displeasure when he spotted Mandal going to the toilet in his vest and underpants. Paswan claims that he was physically assaulted by the MLA and his associates, who demanded that he reveal his name and abused him by referring to his caste. Paswan further claims that the attackers took some of his possessions, including a finger ring, and forced him to drink water from the toilet.
On the basis of Paswan's complaint, a new FIR was filed in New Delhi and referred to the authorities here. The MLA, who represents the Gopalpur constituency in Bhagalpur district, has yet to respond to the various allegations made in the FIR, despite claiming to be suffering from dysentery and having felt the urge to relieve himself as soon as the train chugged away from Patna on Thursday evening in response to public outcry.
