"Series of earthquakes result in death of 3 and injuries to 27 people in China"
A series of earthquakes shook Yangbi Yi Autonomous County in China's Yunnan Province on Friday, killing at least three people and injuring 27 others, according to local authorities.
The tremor was felt across the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture's 12 counties and cities, with Yangbi taking the brunt of the damage.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Centre, four earthquakes of greater than 5.0 magnitude struck Yangbi between 9 and 11 p.m. (Beijing Time). As of 2 a.m., 166 aftershocks have been registered in the area. Rescue teams have been rushed to the earthquake zone, and rescue operations are currently ongoing. However, no casualties have been reported in northwest China's Qinghai Province following a 7.4-magnitude earthquake.
According to CENC data, roughly 25 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or higher have occurred within 200 kilometres of the epicentre in the last five years, the greatest of which happened on Saturday.
