"No vaccine, no liquor’ policy adopted in Etawah of Uttar Pradesh to promote COVID vaccination drive"
The government of Etawah in Uttar Pradesh has come up with a creative way to promote the COVID-19 vaccination effort.
Notices from the Etawah government stating "No booze without immunisation certificate" have been widely put outside liquor businesses in Sefai, Etawah district.
On the orders of Etawah Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Hem Kumar Singh, the notices were posted. After the Aligarh hooch catastrophe, where over 50 people died after consuming counterfeit liquor over the weekend, ADM Singh and district police officers examined liquor establishments in Sefai.
ADM Hem Kumar Singh ordered liquor stores to post notices plainly saying that alcohol will not be supplied to anyone who has not yet received the Covid-19 vaccine.
Liquor store owners have also been instructed not to offer liquor to customers without first validating their immunisation certificates. However, Kamal Kumar Shukla, a district excise official in Etawah, said no order has been issued to prevent the sale of liquor to people who have not yet received the vaccine. He went on to say that while the district administration's efforts to boost inoculations should be applauded, no directives requiring immunisation certificates for the purchase of liquor had been issued.
The Etawah ADM's directive came just days after the Firozabad district magistrate announced that government employees' pay checks will be withheld until they received the vaccine.
